　　雖然香港自詡為國際大都會，但是大眾的英語水平有待提高。我和許多僱主發現，不少年輕的大學畢業生未能掌握英語文法，相信是因為過去多年香港教育當局強調以傳意手法 (communicative ap proach)教授英語，忽略了文法的重要性。
　　其中一個常見的英語文法錯誤，是關於及物動詞 (transitive verbs) 和不及物動詞(intransitive verbs)。 “Transitive” 的字首 “trans” 在拉丁語有 “過渡” 的意思，顧名思義，transitive verbs可以由主語直接過渡到賓語，中間不需要前置詞。例如 “I see a dog.”和 “I hear a song.”中的 “see” 和 “hear”。相反，不及物動詞和賓語之間一定要有前置詞，例如 “I look at my dog.”的 “look” 及 “I listen to a song.” 的 “listen”。配上不同的前置詞，可能有不同的意思，比方說，“look at”解作 “看”，“look up” 解作 “探訪”，“look into”解作 “調查”、“研究”等。
　　不少人在使用及物動詞時誤加前置詞，例如把 “investigate the case” 說成 “investigate into the case” ，把 “discuss this topic” 說成 “discuss on this topic”。其實，只要記着 “investigate” 和 “discuss”是及物動詞，便不會胡亂加上前置詞。及物動詞名詞化，變成 “investigation”和 “discussion”後，才須使用前置詞，如： “investigation into the case” 及 “discussion on this topic”。學習這些文法規則，一定要花點工夫記誦。
